And they who say: O our Lord! grant us in our wives and our offspring the joy of our eyes, and make us guides to those who guard (against evil). (Furqan: 74)
This phrase 'Coolness of the eyes', prior to the Qur'an was used by ancient arabs.
How the Arabs used this phrase
When someone shed tears of sorrow, Arabs would say that 'the eyes have become warm'. It was almost like a curse, as if he was saying 'May he suffer the worst kinds of sorrow'. Therefore the eyes becoming cool is equated with finding refuge in a storm.
With regards to this dua, all of us have to appreciate the power of it. Allah tells us so eloquently that the home should be the place of refuge.
Can you imagine the state of Musa's, alayhis salaam mother when she puts him in the water? On the other hand we have Asiya, the Pharoah's wife who is being mentally tortured by her husband and she seeks refuge in Allah. Allah brings to her Musa, alayhis salaam and her first reaction is that 'he will be the coolness of my eyes'.
When Musa, alayhis salaam, was reunited with his mother, it was so her eyes could be cooled.
This dua is very powerful and one should sincerely ask to be the coolness of the eyes of their spouse and that the generations that follow be the coolness of the eyes for them.
